“The Duke: in his profession, one of the world’s best…”

De 70-plusser Michael John "Duke" Robillard is een Amerikaanse blues muzikant, met (nu al!) een opmerkelijke 50-jarige carrière. Na zijn werk voor de (iconische) Guild Guitar Company (die al meer dan 60 jaar lang handgemaakte Guild gitaren bouwt) en in enkele bands gespeeld te hebben, richt Robillard in 1967, samen met pianist Al Copley, Roomful of Blues op. Later maakt Robillard ook deel uit van de legendarische Fabulous Thunderbirds, waar harmonicaspeler Kim Wilson (nog steeds) deel van uitmaakte en waar hij Jimmie Vaughan op gitaar verving. Meer recent was hij de medeoprichter van het New Guitar Summit sextet en van Sunny & Her Joy Boys van zanger Sunny Crownover. 

Duke Robillard’s stijl als gitarist is naast blues ook jazz, swing en r&r. Hij wordt wel eens vergeleken met zijn voorganger T-Bone Walker. Robillard stond al in de studio samen met groten als Jimmy Witherspoon, Snooky Prior, Jay McShann, Hal Singer, Ruth Brown, Billy Boyd Arnold, Eddie Clearwater, Pinetop Perkins, Joe Louis Walker, Todd Sharpville, Wham!, Tom Waits en Bob Dylan. In 2006 tourde Robillard nog in de States met Tom Waits tijdens de promotie van Waits’ ‘Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers & Bastards‘ album en in 2013 als lead gitarist in de band van Nobelprijswinnaar Robert Allen Zimmerman, aka de nu bijna 80-jarige Bob Dylan.

Robillard debuteerde in 1984 solo met Duke Robillard & the Pleasure Kings. Zijn 2009-album ‘Tales From The Tiki Lounge’, was een tribute aan een andere iconische gitaarbouwer, singer-songwriter en gitarist Lester William Polsfuss (1915–2009) aka Les Paul. Voor die gelegenheid speelde hij o.a. op een Gold Top en andere (waarschijnlijke speciale) Les Paul gitaren. ‘Blues Full Circle’ nam Robillard op in 2016 met “his” All-Star Combo en de opvolger ‘Ear Worms’ (2019) met zijn band: Bruce Bears (piano, Hammondorgel), Brad Hallen (a/e bas) & Mark Teixeira (drums, percussie) en, met de gewoonlijke “Special Guests”, die ditmaal vooral door hun zangkwaliteiten opvallen. Ik noem hier de Bostonian Chris Cote, Sunny Crownover, Mark Cutler, Julie Grant, Dave Howard en Klem Klimek.

Van Robillard weten we dat, na een carrière van méér dan 50 jaar, het woord “stilzitten” nog niet over zijn lopen rolt. ‘Blues Bash!’ is de titel van zijn nieuwe album dat deze maand bij Stony Plain Records verschijnt. Zijn doelstelling was om een “rechttoe rechtaan blues party album in vintage-stijl te maken met aanstekelige, dansbare ritmes…”. Robillard nam met veel zin het album op met de Duke Robillard Band en “Friends”, met gastvocalisten Chris Cote en Michelle Willson en met twee blazerssecties. Uit zijn vroege Roomful of Blues-jaren en te horen op de meeste nummers: de volledige drie saxen-line-up bestaande uit Greg Piccolo (tenor), Rich Lataille (alt, tenor) & Doug James (bariton) en, op slechts één track Al Basile & “Sax” Gordon Beadle. De ritmesecties bestaan ook uit bekende stalwarts: bassisten Jesse Williams & Marty Ballou en drummer Mark Teixeira (+ Marty Richards ook op die ene track). Andere gasten zijn harmonicaspeler Mark Hummel en pianist Bob Welsh. Zij graven met Duke op de opener in het territorium van Jimmy Rogers in een remake van Duke's “No Time” (‘Dangerous Place’, 1997), één van de drie originals die hij voor ‘Blues Bash!’ opnieuw opnam.

Gastvocalist Chris Cote uit Boston werkt in verschillende bands en kan (dixit Robillard) “alles zingen". Hij doet de zang op de swingende opener, Ike Turner’s “Do You Mean It” en is ook te horen op Roy Milton’s rocker uit 1955, “What Can I Do” en “You Don’t Know What You’re Doin’”. De vrouwelijke gastvocaliste Michelle “Evil Gal” Willson zingt Helen Humes’ “You Played On My Piano”. Smiley Lewis‘ “I Ain’t Gonna Do It”, die “ene” track,is qua line-up een bijzonder nummer. Hier treden aan: boogie pianist Mark ”Mr. B” Braun (hij is van begin tot eind de ruggengraat van het nummer), Marty Richards (drums), Marty Ballou (bas), Al Basile (kornet) & Sax Gordon (tenor & bariton sax). “Give Me All the Love You Got” is de titel van de tweede Robillard-do-over, die voor de afsluiter (de derde original) nog snel uit de boxen rolt. Het is toetsenist Bruce Bears, die op de afsluitende, relaxte “late night blues deluxe”, “Just Chillin'” een mooie orgelshowcase krijgt.

We weten van Duke Robillard zelf, dat hij zichzelf niet ziet als een “great artist”, maar eerder en liever als een historicus, kenner en conservator, als het over blues, jazz, swing en jump muziek gaat. Op ‘Blues Bash!’ etaleert hij kundig en autoritair zijn veelomvattende passie en virtuositeit voor deze muziek én, kan je duidelijk horen dat de Duke zich nog altijd goed voelt. ‘Blues Bash!’ is opnieuw een mijlpaal in de carrière van jawel, in zijn vak een van de beste ter wereld. ’Blues Bash!’ slaat in én is een blues feestje. Men zegge het voort!
